Intro: Eastern European stock markets were mostly lower this
week. V-o-A's Barry Wood reports the Polish market declined
significantly, and there was little news to push stocks higher in
the Czech Republic and Hungary.
Text: In Warsaw, stocks fell nearly three percent Friday as the
"Wig" index ended the week at 78-hundred-53. Analysts say the
Warsaw market was reacting negatively to a new poll that shows
former communist Alexander Kwasnieski could win the Polish
presidency in the first round of national voting which takes
place November fifth. Market participants fear a socialist
victory would unsettle the exchange and discourage foreign
participation.
In Prague, the stock market was marginally lower Friday and
showed modest declines for the week. This is the second straight
declining week after the Prague exchange had registered gains for
the previous month. The P-X 50 index ends at 437. The market
rally had peaked at over 450.
In Budapest, the market was similarly lackluster. The "Bux"
index, which had been at 1995 highs, closed down, below
15-hundred-16. In Bratislava, the smallest of the Central
European exchanges, prices were higher. The B-S-E index gained
about a point to end the week at 164. (Signed)
