>>I am curious to know if the family's choice of the

I would suspect that someone from Hungary, especially northern Hungary might
interchangably use Laszlo, Ladislaus, or Lasdislaw... depending on the
audience. In America, Leslie might also come up.
Remembering the early sixties, when the vast majority of 56-ers became US
citizens, most of us kept our HUngarian last names but opted for the English
translation of our first names.
In my case, my Hungarian passport shows Karoly and my US passport shows
Charles. To me they are the same name in tha same vein as Magyarorszag is
Hungary, Ungarn, Hongrie, etc.
Belive me, trying to start a new life at a time most of were convinced we will
never again see our homeland, having an English first name was much easier and
helpful than keeping our Hungarian names
Of course, thtere were many who either had names that were difficult to
translate (Arpad, Attlia, etc) and there were many who chose not to translate.
Perhaps the most surprising incident I remember was a weekend in the early
sixties, when almost every weekend we celebrated yet another Hungarian's US
citizenship, was a friend of ours, who used his right to have the Courts award
any name he chose. Imagin
e after 5 years, having called him Imre, he announced that his new,
Americanized name is Zsolt. He always liked the name Zsolt, and he used the US
courts to name him that.

Regards...
Charlie, Karcsi, Karoly, Karesz, stb., etc.

Most often "egeszsegedre"(in the "THOU" case) is used meanining "to thy health"
,
or "egeszsegere' (to YOUR health)

Whoever has the Gold makes the Rule!

Dear Peter,

Good point. I'd like to know too!

May your work on behalf of Hungarians in Vojvodina bear fruit. I've made
several postings to the alt.current affairs.bosnia ng on this matter in an
attempt to bring it to the attention of readers concerned with events in
(ex-) Yugoslavia.

BTW, do your human rights considerations exclude females? Why do you not
address the readership of this ng with "LADIES & Gentlemen"?

This reminds me of a story from an American friend who had lived in Spain
for several years. He was learning French. When he tried to speak French
to someone in person, they would look at him and start speaking to him in
English. If he were to try when the other person couldn't see him (e.g. on
the phone) they would speak back to him in Spanish. His Spanish accent was
so good that it would leak into his French--causing the recipient to assume
his native language was Spanish.

Dear Peter,
Please, read the articles in the news.announce.newusers group. Those
are quite useful for every beginner. Usenet specific questions might be
answered faster in the news.newusers.questions group. Also, there are
plenty of books about network services that deal with Usenet.
Different news readers treat read articles differently. Some cases you
have to explicitly delete the news (pine), other readers (trn, Netscape)
automatically hide articles that you have already read.
Different news servers delete (expire) news articles after a different
period of time automatically. You can also set expiraton date for the
articles you post. If you think your articles have been deleted at your
LOCAL news site (I could not see evidence for that at any other site I
can reach), please, complain to your news administrator or change the
news server you are downloading your articles from.
Take care,
Gotthard
