Hello,
I am Hungarian by ancestry. Family names Balazsik and Bezeredi. My mother
and I will be traveling in Budapest next spring trying to find our
"roots". What I need are names of good hotels in the $80 to $120US range
(two beds), preferably with internet access. If that's not possible then
maybe some good Bed and Breakfasts (private homes with very nice tourist
oriented rooms for rent). Perhaps there are some public sites where I can
access the net (e-mail only) while I'm there. The net part is very
important. I'd also be interested in renting a car and need to know the
place where I can get one at a good price. What are the international
driving laws? Will a US license suffice? And if that's not enough, I need
some of the good offbeat spots to see. Something that perhaps is not very
"touristy" but is worth checking out.
I'm also currently doing some genealogical research into my family. Both
my grandparents and Great-grandparents arrived in the US in the early
1900s and settled in Cleveland Ohio. The village they were from was
Endred in the city of Sopron. I'm currently searching the birth, death and
marriage certificates for that village, so perhaps I will have good luck.

I found a working version of ACCENT at ftp.cica.indiana.edu
It is not a full version...but it is one awsom word processor in
60 different languages. Not bad for FREE........

I do not see your problem. One does not exclude the other.
There is no "more suitable" in this case, in fact, the more places
you write to the better. Although, just from common sense, a possible
act from the U.S. and Hungarian governments would have more effect on
the situation than private letters sent in by Hungarians to Milosevic.

maybe it's old news, but it's news to me...
i've just heard on the local pacifica radio station here in san
francisco that hungary has the highest suicide rate in the world (on a
per capita basis).
the rate in hungary is several times higher than finland's, which
occupies the second place in this particularly morbid statistic.
apparently, the rate of non-ethnic hungarians living in hungary
(slovaks, jews, romanians, etc.) is significantly lower than the one
of the pure breed magyars. also, the rate for the hungarian ethnics
living in neighboring countries is higher than for the ethnic majority
in those countries. i wonder if any similar statistics have been done
for the hungarian community in the usa, for instance?...
apparently, there are no clear explanations for this so far.
however, it is interesting to note that hungary and finland occupy the
top places. a genetic link perhaps?
any opinions?

08/25/95 NEW BRUNSWICK CHAPTER -- held another chapter meeting yesterday.
Here are some highlights:
- We have begun looking at hotels to hold the National Convention.
The most popular option at this point is the Hyatt Hotel in
downtown New Brunswick;
- We have made plans for setting up the Hungarian Student Reception
in September. We have also changed the date from Sept. 8 to the
15th. at the Hungarian Heritage Center.
- Csilla Kun-Szabo was voted unanimously to be chapter president
for the rest of the year, completing Bernie Tamas' term;
- We might be changing the dates of the first round table and the
kavehaz. The round table would come first so that we can hear
about the controversies relating to the removal of the Hungarian
Catholic priest from St. Laszlo church.
