One of the most thought-provoking artist to emerge
from the post-Communist explosion of art in Central Europe,
Jozsef Szurcsik, will be exhibiting at the Belenky gallery
in March in a new show “N – VISAGES”.

Szurcsik has been at the top of his profession for two
decades, with exhibits as far afield as Finland, Israel,
Venezuela and Japan.

His work – a range of drawings, etchings, lithographs, oil
paintings, sculptures, performance and musical
interpretations – addresses the individual human condition
faced with the overwhelming power of society and the weight
of the past, through a symbolic man-face expression of time
and mood.

This semi-realist but emblematic motif is fused with
objects, the environment, earth, and geometrical patterns
into figurative and abstract forms on a three-dimensional
canvas coated with a rough, cracked surface of layers of
discarded paint.

“Life is three-dimensional – four, if you include time –
and I have always wondered how to move oil painting from
the traditional flat surface into a third dimension without
losing the essential quality that only painting can give,” –
 says Szurcsik, 2001.

Jozsef Szurcsik was born in 1959 in Budapest, Hungary.

He graduated from the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in
1985 and has served on the executive committee of the
European Council of Artists.

His technically accomplished work – which is especially
relevant to today’s globalized, corporate world – is rooted
in his struggle to produce pieces during a Communist system
which was quick to suppress work such as his that
questioned its authoritarian methods.

Szurcsik has received numerous prizes in his own country as
well as international awards from France, Egypt, Germany
and Japan.
